SMALL OPERATOR: Mako's Market and Pharmacy

As a family-owned business since 1994, Mako’s Market and Pharmacy is committed to providing their customers with unmatched quality and service.

With strong community ties, a unique customer-focused shopping experience, and a variety of affordable products, their locally-sourced groceries set Mako’s apart from big-chain competitors. Just a few of their specialties include fresh produce delivered throughout the week, local Ohio favorites straight from the farm, custom fruit and vegetable trays, fruit baskets, bulk chocolates and candies, and special pricing for bulk, club and restaurants.

In addition to a large and diverse produce department, Mako’s has the largest selection of beer and wine in the area, a full-service deli and meat department and of course, their pharmacy – which prides itself on the finest patient care possible since their modest beginnings.

LARGE OPERATOR: Columbiana Foods

Saying that family ties are the heartbeat of Columbiana Foods also speaks to the success of this fourth-generation company, because the success of Columbiana Foods (Giant Eagle) is directly related to the profile and influence of the Graff family in the Youngstown community.

Since 1979 Columbiana Foods has served their local community with their original store in Calcutta, adding additional stores in Letonia and Youngstown – each with its own unique character and personality, but always providing the best in locally-sourced products and the finest service.

Of special significance are the meat and deli departments, their pre-pack meal programs developed with local restaurants,  and their extensive wine and liquor departments, offering the largest selection of wines and craft beer in the area.

Probably most important to the Graff family, however, is making sure that their employees and the customers they serve. are treated like family...a tradition that has met with great success for more than 40 years.

Much like the OGA Pinnacle Awards, which recognize overall excellence in food industry retail operations, the Associate of the Year Award recognizes excellence from our Associate members. The criteria are based on: creativity, merchandising, innovation, human resources, community relations and overall successful operation.

At Perry’s Ice Cream, we think ice cream is one of the best parts of life—making the awesome moments better and the less great ones a little sweeter. How? Well, nearly 100 years ago, our ice cream company's founder, H. Morton Perry, gave us our marching orders: “Make sure you put in enough of the good stuff.”

With over 400 employees, Perry's uses fresh, local, high quality milk and cream to proudly craft and slow-cook its ice cream for an exceptionally creamy texture and taste that consumers have fallen in love with for over 100 years. Perry's is the 24th largest ice cream brand in the country and our products can be found across New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
